Every Old Cottage Has a Story Waiting to Be Told

A few weeks ago, if you had driven past this little cottage, you probably would have seen what most people see.
A weathered old house.
Untended gardens.
A little rough around the edges.
Maybe even a place someone else would drive right past.
I looked at the very same cottage...
...and saw something completely different.
Not because it already looked like the image on the right, but because I could imagine what it might become.
That's one of the things I love most about creativity.
Artists spend their lives looking at ordinary things and imagining what could be.
A blank canvas becomes a painting.
An old teacup becomes a planter.
A tarnished silver tray becomes the centrepiece of a table.
And sometimes...
an old 100-year-old cottage becomes the home of a dream.
The image on the right isn't a photograph.
It's an artist's rendering of the vision I'm slowly growing toward.
Will it look exactly like this someday?
Probably not.
Maybe it'll be even better.
Because the best things are never built overnight.
They're created one small choice at a time.
One flower planted.
One chair painted.
One lantern hung.
One guest welcomed.
One workshop shared.
When I host my very first Fern & Fable gathering this September, the gardens won't be overflowing.
There may still be cobwebs tucked into forgotten corners.
There will almost certainly be weeds that have no intention of cooperating.
And that's okay.
Because Fern & Fable has never been about perfection.
It's about creating spaces where people feel welcome.
Where creativity matters more than flawless outcomes.
Where stories are shared around a table.
Where beauty is cultivated slowly.
Sometimes I think we put far too much pressure on ourselves to arrive looking like the picture in our heads.
Maybe life is meant to look a little more like the left side before it becomes the right.
A little weathered.
A little wild.
But absolutely full of possibility.
So if you happen to visit Fern & Fable this fall, I hope you'll look past the gardens that are still finding their footing.
Instead, I hope you'll see what I see.
Not just an old cottage.
But the beginning of a story.
And I hope you'll become part of it.
